Australia has discovered the MV Nungah ship, which claimed the lives of 21 people, after 55 years. According to the BBC, this ship departed from New South Wales to Townsville on August 23, 1969.
The ship, carrying a container filled with steel, had 52 people on board. By August 25, it had progressed 315 kilometers while facing a dangerous storm. With a speed exceeding 110 kilometers per hour, the ship couldn’t handle the conditions and sank.
After the ship sank, the Australian military conducted the largest maritime search in history. The military deployed planes, helicopters, and ships to search for the MV Nungah. Within a few hours, the ship was found, and 26 people, including 5 crew members, were rescued.
Even 12 hours after the ship sank, the Australian military found people floating on wooden debris. However, the ship itself had not been found since then.
Last month, scientists from the Commonwealth Scientific and Industrial Research Organisation (CSIRO) began searching for the ship. They sent a high-tech ship to the location.
According to the scientists, they found the wreckage of the ship 170 meters below the surface. They stated that the design and shape of the wreckage matched that of the MV Nungah. The report mentions that the ship will now be examined under the Sydney Project.
